Starting your first practice

How to pick material on the Study page, set the number of question packages, timer, and feedback, and then press Start Practice.

Pick your material

All material lives on the Study page. You choose a course with the course picker at the top of the app, and a subcourse (such as Reading) with the large card at the top of the Study page: click Switch subcourse, then pick one from the Choose subcourse list. Subcourses that are not available yet are greyed out and cannot be picked. The first time you arrive, the subcourse that opens follows the skill you chose to tackle first during onboarding.

A subcourse is organised into parts. Inside each one you will find lesson cards (reading material) and practice cards, ordered along the learning path. The practice suggested next carries a Start bubble. Practices you have already done show a green tick and a mastery badge, while pretests and posttests are labelled Assessment.

Why some cards are locked

The practices in a part open once that part's pretest is done. The posttest opens once the pretest is done and every practice in the part has reached Mastered. Click a locked card to see why, or read How the mastery indicator works.

Set up the session

Click a practice card to open its detail. If the practice has a lesson, you are asked to choose first: Lesson to read the material, or Practice to go straight to practising. The practice settings give you three things to set:

  1. Packages, how many question packages to work through in this session. An estimate of the number of questions shows under the label.
  2. Show timer, a countdown that submits the session automatically when it runs out. When it is on, set its length with Duration. The default is 8 minutes per question package.
  3. Show instant feedback, whether you want your answers marked after each package. The timer and instant feedback cannot be on together: switching one on switches the other off.

Press Start Practice to begin. The difference between the last two settings is covered in Practice mode versus test mode.

Your choices are remembered

The number of packages, the timer, its duration, and the feedback choice are saved in your browser, so the next session starts with the same setup without you configuring it again.

No account yet? You can still do one practice as a guest. See Trying Xplodia without an account.

Pretests and posttests are different

For pretests and posttests the button reads Start Test and nothing is configurable: the question set is full and fixed (Full test), marking is held until you submit, and the timer is always shown. That keeps assessment results fair to compare.

While the session runs

Your answers save automatically as you go. If the tab closes or you leave the app mid-session, the session waits for you. When you come back, a You have an unfinished practice screen gives you two choices: Continue Practice to pick up where you stopped, or Abandon session to drop it. Until that session is finished, you cannot start another practice. If the timer is on, it keeps running while you are away.

The X button is not a pause button

The X button in the top left of the player (Exit practice) ends the session. Once you confirm Leave Practice, that session's progress is lost.
